Health Tourism in Turkey and Regulations

One decade ago, public health organizations were dominant in healthcare industry of
Turkey. After 1990, private sector investments have boomed in healthcare industry and it has
made great progress (TUSIAD, 2009).

This transition period is supported by well-educated and well-qualified physicians and other health staff and strengthened through the accreditation
of healthcare organizations by international standardization organizations. Transition period
has created high-quality but more affordable healthcare services for the local and foreign
patients.

As a result, Turkey has become the medical tourism destination which hosts 40,000
medical tourists from all over the world in a year (Istanbul Health Tour Service). While
Turkey was shown as “other medical tourism destinations” in Grail Research (2009) (see
Figure 3), a few years later; today, Turkey is shown among the key medical tourism
destinations by the international authorities particularly in following treatment types: organ
and bone marrow transplantation, cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, oncology, gamma
knife, in vitro fertilization, orthopedics and traumatology, spine surgery, neurosurgery,
reproductive health and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, plastic surgery, dental services,
ophthalmology (Foreign Economic Relations Board, 2011)
